Honolulu Classics for Dinner and Dessert

Although we also had a fancier version of poke as an appetizer at a nicer restaurant, I wanted to try the everyday style served with rice as a main dish. Based on recommendations from TripAdvisor, we headed to Ono Seafood.

The tiny takeaway shop offers a choice of brown or white rice, as well as 8 different styles of poke using ahi tuna or tako (octopus). I wasn't brave enough to try the latter, so I got a combo with Shoyu ahi and Hawaiian-style ahi. They were both tasty but a bit spicier than expected, so I preferred the Shoyu with the special house sauce.

Afterwards, we walked up the street to Leonard's Bakery, which is known for their Portuguese donuts called malasadas. We decided to order 2 each for breakfast the next day, not realizing that they would be made fresh and served hot.

However, it turns out that a warm and gooey donut rolled in cinnamon sugar is a perfect post-poke dessert. When I ate the custard-filled malasada the next morning, the custard was still delicious but the sugary outside had absorbed into the dough, which sadly had not fared too well overnight.
