Let Them Eat Cake
I have written previously about a famous bakery in Hong Kong, but the truth is that there are bakeries all over this city. I'm sure there is one inside every MTR station, and there are at least six that are within a very short walk from my apartment.
Most of the bakeries here are in the Chinese style, obviously. Some of the popular items are egg tarts, pineapple buns, barbecue pork buns and other savory breads with toppings like corn, pork floss or egg salad.
My current favorite from a Chinese bakery is a coconut tart (pictured above with a cherry in the center). This is basically an American-style macaroon baked inside a flaky pie crust that is usually served warm. It is buttery and sweet and melts in your mouth!
I also frequently buy an individual walnut cake from the bakery (pictured above in a cupcake-like wrapper). These cakes are really quite plain, just buttery yellow cake with walnuts on top and/or inside. They are not overly moist, yet I find their flavor very satisfying, which says a lot coming from a usually chocolate cake person.
David has a family tradition of eating cakes and sandwiches with tea for dinner on a Sunday evening. A couple of times we have continued that tradition here by having cheese sandwiches and lots of little cakes, including those pictured above. Although on that occasion, I was much too greedy while shopping, and we only ate about half of the cakes in one sitting.
