Lunch at A Lorcha in Macau

When my mother visited Hong Kong recently, we took a day trip to Macau. The last time I went there was more than 2 years ago, and I was out of the food blogging habit. I remember eating a chocolate-dipped cone from Dairy Queen (because we don't have it here) and an egg tart, but not much else that was noteworthy.

This time around, we stumbled upon a Portuguese-style restaurant called A Lorcha next to the A-Ma Temple, one of the main Chinese temples in Macau. From a quick Google search, it seems that this restaurant is not only popular with tourists and guidebooks but also considered a good place to try Portuguese food.

We ordered two dishes to share, as that usually works well in restaurants here in Hong Kong. However, they were quite large, so we could have ordered just one, along with a side, and it would have been plenty of food. We also got delicious, warm bread rolls and butter to start with.

The first dish to arrive was Portuguese fried rice. It was fairly similar to other fried rices, though it had more red and green peppers rather than carrots and peas. The sausage and the olives were other more European touches, which gave it a very nice flavor.

Our second dish was a Portuguese chicken stew that was seasoned with turmeric. The chicken was yummy, despite being still on the bone, and there were also potatoes in the sauce. We got steamed rice to go with the stew as well, though it was not mentioned on the menu, and we certainly couldn't eat it all.

In fact, we ate so much of our delicious lunch that we were too full to eat anything else in Macau. Not even the famous egg tarts!
