Almond Joy

If you're ever passing through Tipton, Mo., which is located on Highway 50 between Jefferson City and Sedalia, I highly recommend stopping at the Dutch Bakery run by local Mennonites. There you can find all sorts of bulk spices, grains and candies, as well as delicious baked goods like breads, cinnamon rolls and cookies. However, the store's signature item is a Dutch letter — a letter-shaped pastry filled with sweet almond paste.
My father lives in Tipton, so I've grown up on this delicacy. Pretty much every time I'm in town, I buy at least one letter, which is yummy anytime but especially good for breakfast. Once, I even tried to make my own letters, but they didn't quite compare to the real thing. So, the gist of this blog entry is, try a Dutch letter — they're amazing.

  1. These sound yummy! Since I live in Wisconsin, though, I'm going to have to try and make my own...this recipe seems to have the blessings of many who live in Iowa and Missouri!
