Lotus Veggie

A few weeks ago, I read an article in Hong Kong Magazine featuring local vegetarian restaurants, and I posted it on Facebook for my veggie roommates and friends to see. One of them has since started a Facebook group to organize times for us to go and try them all.

This Sunday afternoon we went to Lotus Veggie in Kowloon City (see HK Magazine information pasted below). It was a short minibus ride away from our apartment in an older and less Western area of Hong Kong. The restaurant itself is fairly small, but the four of us were seated right away.

In the typical Chinese fashion, we ordered dishes to share among everyone. We got two fake meat dishes: honey 'barbecued' beancurd and vegetarian Peking duck. We also ordered eggplant, which came along with bitter melon in a really nice garlic/bean sauce, and we tried to get steamed dumplings, but they didn't seem to have any. Of course, we had steamed rice and jasmine tea as well.

All of our food was really delicious! Fake meat is a strange concept at first, but in both dishes, it had a nice texture as well as great flavor. The eggplant was very good, too, and even the tea was particularly nice. And, we each paid only $60 HK for a tasty Sunday lunch.

As we left the restaurant, we bought slices of sponge cake on display in the front window. Like everything else, it was quite good -- the typical Chinese-style cake that is not too sweet or too heavy, but a good way to end a meal.
